Hydrogen is an energy carrier and is produced from fossil, fossil-free and renewable energy sources. The main uses of hydrogen are for energy storage, heavy transport and the process industry. Thanks to the high content of hydrogen in water, for example, the supply of hydrogen is virtually unlimited, and has great potential as an energy carrier as it can be produced by solar, wind and hydropower.
The uses of hydrogen
Hydrogen can be produced by electrolysis, which in simple terms means splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen by applying electricity in an electrolyser. An alternative to electrolysis is to reform biogas or natural gas through a plasma process. Hydrogen has a wide range of applications and is often used in industrial activities. For example, hydrogen is used to produce ammonia, which is then a key component in the production of fertilisers. It also plays a key role in the transition of heavy industry towards reduced emissions, and is expected to play a primary role in the ongoing transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
